American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) recognizes Shock Wave at Six Flags Over Texas as an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark, a designation reserved for rides of historic significance.

During the height of the looping roller coaster craze of the late 1970s, many amusement parks worldwide were looking to add their own version to their park’s lineup. Six Flags Over Texas hired premier steel roller coaster builder Anton Schwarzkopf (1924-2001) of Germany to construct a thrilling addition, with two consecutive vertical loops that could be seen prominently from nearby Interstate 30.

The layout was custom-designed by the legendary steel roller coaster engineer Werner Stengel (1936-    ). His innovative coaster concept utilizes an innovative quad-tube track system with cone-and-plug supports to minimize the structure, as well as using a box-beam style design for the large vertical inversions.

Shock Wave opened to thrill seekers on April 22, 1978, marketed as the tallest coaster in the world for its time. Climbing to a maximum height of 116 feet, the trains make a sharp U-turn and then immediately plummet into the powerful back-to-back loops. Riders experience several moments of airtime along with some twists and turns during the ride’s 3,500-foot course, reaching a top speed of 55 mph.

Today, Shock Wave continues to thrill guests with its iconic double loops and smooth ride experience. ACE applauds Six Flags Over Texas for its commitment to maintaining and preserving one of Schwarzkopf’s few custom-built looping creations.
